This page will list OBD interfaces that were tested with V-Tool. We strongly recommend to use vLinker MC+ or OBDLink MX+ interfaces. However, other interfaces, even if not listed below, can work flawlessly with V-Tool. To have full support on P1/P2/P3 platforms it is important that interface supports MS CAN communication. It is usually called as “ForScan compatibility” in adapter specification. The other important parameter is internal memory size, but unfortunately, manufacturers do not provide this information and the only way to check it is to to test it.
For now only Bluetooth devices are supported by V-Tool. Support for WiFi OBD devices will be added in the future.
General recommendations:
Select OBD adapter that support Medium-Speed CAN (MS-CAN) if you have P1/P2/P3 platform Volvo. Simply these are all Volvos before SPA era.
SPA/CMA cars don’t need MS-CAN support
If you have iPhone, then you need Bluetooth 4.0 (also called BLE) version. Usually these adapters are marked as “+” version. Exceptions are OBDLink MX+, vLinker MS, vLinker FS. All these 3 devices are Apple MFi certified devices and also will work with V-Tool OBD Scanner, even though they are not using BLE.
Android phones will work with Bluetooth 3.0 (also called classic) version.
Note: if you don’t need support for P1/P2/P3 cars this interface can be used with SPA/CMA cars.
Tested and NOT recommended OBD adapters
NEXAS NexLink
Platforms:
SPA/CMA (do not connect)
P1, P2, P3 (only HS CAN modules)
NEXAS NexLink does not support MS-CAN and internal memory size is too small to support SPA models.
Veepeak OBDCheck BLE+
Platforms:
SPA/CMA (do not connect)
P1, P2, P3 (only HS CAN modules)
Even though VEEPEAK adapters has premium quality design and are nicely packed, their internal memory size is too small to work correctly with V-Tool. Also, it does not support MS-CAN.
